SolidaritTown – meeting in Medina de Rioseco

Experience the Magic of Solidaritown. A Journey of Community and Culture
Medina de Rioseco recently came alive with Solidaritown, a two days long celebration of volunteering, cultural heritage, and festive spirit.

From early morning, the historic town welcomed participants with open arms, as Mayor David Esteban Rodríguez set the tone with a warm and inspiring address.

The morning focused on the power of volunteering and youth participation, featuring insights from local leaders and experts, including UNICEF’s regional coordinator.

 

After a refreshing coffee break, participants embarked on a scenic journey. TheAntonio de Ulloaboat took them along the picturesque Canal de Castilla, followed by an intriguing visit to the historic Harinas San Antonio factory—a testament to the region’s rich industrial past.

The afternoon celebrated identity and heritage with art historian Virginia Asensio and José Ángel Gallego ofTribuna de Valladolid. Their talks transported attendees through Medina de Rioseco’s storied traditions.

Evening sightseeing unveiled the treasures of the San Francisco Museum and the Holy Week Museum. As night fell, the illuminated beauty of the Benavente Chapel and the Church of Santiago de los Caballeros cast an enchanting glow, highlighting the town’s architectural wonders.

The second day spotlighted European projects, with experts M.ª Belén Miranda Escolar and Paula Guerra discussing rural development and funding opportunities. Attendees then enjoyed a culinary journey, sampling Terracampan gastronomy and traditional Christmas sweets, accompanied by audiovisual showcases of local culinary traditions. A key highlight of the event was the session on Exchange of Best Practices on Volunteering in Times of Crisis, facilitated by Esther Delgado and Celia López. This engaging discussion brought together local and regional associations to share experiences and strategies for navigating challenges during critical times.

The session on European Institutions featured insights from Raúl de la Hoz, Member of the European Parliament, and Francisco Fonseca Morillo, Director of the Institute of European Studies at UVA. They discussed the role of European institutions in fostering regional development and highlighted opportunities for greater engagement and collaboration at the local level.

 

The grand finale brought the community together in the Plaza Mayor. A lively parade of cultural and sports groups, inspiring speeches, and the dazzling inauguration of Christmas lights and the holiday market set the town aglow with festive spirit.

Solidaritown was more than an event—it was a celebration of Medina de Rioseco’s heart and soul, leaving participants inspired by the strength of community and the beauty of tradition.
